An Interview About The Garden Book

An Interview About The Garden Book

I thought it would be fun to answer some of the most common questions I’ve been asked about The Garden Book — why I created it, who it’s for, and how it can truly change your garden season.

Here’s the heart behind it.

Why did you make this product?

I was getting frustrated with the planners and journals on the market. So many of them were filled with extra pages I felt obligated to complete — but they didn’t actually serve me. And truthfully? I never looked back at half of those details again.

I wanted something simpler. More focused. More intentional.

So I started paying attention to what information actually helped me during the season. What was I tracking? What did I reference again and again? What made my life easier?

From there, I built a planner designed around those real needs — not filler, not fluff. Just what matters in the garden.

Who is this for?

If you garden and like to be organized — this is for you.

If you’re a beginner and need a starting point — this is for you.

If you’re experienced and know exactly what you want to track — this is for you.

If you want to remember the green bean variety your kids loved…
If you try new things and want to repeat successes (and avoid failures)…
If you want flexibility without overwhelm…

This book was designed with both structure and freedom in mind. It keeps key details together in an easy, clear way — but it leaves space for you to make it your own.

How could this impact your life?

My goal is simple: make gardening easier and clearer.

Imagine this:

  • You only have 5 minutes in the garden. You glance at your Weekly Tasks and see weeding is Thursday’s priority. You weed for 5 minutes. Done.
  • You have a full Saturday outside. You check the monthly calendar and notice warm days but freezing nights ahead. You plan your projects — and remember to lay out frost cloth.
  • It’s mid-July and your neighbor’s tomatoes are thriving. You jot down their variety on your “Ideas for Next Year” page. When planning season rolls around, you’re ready.

This planner creates rhythm.

The Monthly Tasks page helps you see what repeats.
The weekly structure removes decision fatigue.
The calendar keeps weather and priorities visible.

Take what you need. Leave the rest.

No overwhelm. Just clarity.

What problem does it solve?

The garden season can feel quick, chaotic, and short — especially here in Zone 5.

This book walks you step-by-step through:

  • Planning what seeds and plants you want to grow
  • Tracking when and where you plant them
  • Designing your garden beds
  • Organizing projects and to-do lists
  • Reflecting at the end of the season
  • Capturing ideas for next year

And the calendar? It’s undated — intentionally.

I don’t garden in November and December. I don’t need to dedicate pages to months I’m not using. By keeping it undated, you fill in only what matters to you and your season.

Even the date boxes are customizable. I use mine for high/low air temperatures. You might track soil temps, wind direction, rainfall — whatever is most important to your garden.

It works for you.

The Three Features I’m Most Excited About

1. The Monthly Calendar Spread

The space is maximized.
The soft-corner date design is clean.
And the temperature tracking area? Game changer.

Late spring and early summer demand attention to highs and lows. A small temperature note can determine whether I:

  • Cover plants
  • Adjust greenhouse heat
  • Plant cold crops
  • Delay a project

That tiny detail changes the entire day.

2. The Weekly To-Do List

On the left side of the spread, aligned with the week. I assign big projects first. Then I break them down across the days. It gives structure without rigidity.

3. The “Next Month” Page

Ideas pop up mid-month. I notice something needs attention. Instead of forgetting, I jot it down for next month. When it’s time to plan, I already have a ready-made task list.

Nothing gets lost. Nothing gets overlooked.

What’s the end result?

At the end of the season, I hope you feel this:

  • Your garden was enjoyable — not overwhelming.
  • You have all the important details and none of the fluff.
  • You already have a jump start on next year.
  • Everything is in one place.

I picture you in the morning with a cup of coffee, reviewing the day’s plan.

At night, maybe you jot down notes. Maybe you don’t. No pressure.

Each month feels intentional. You work with the weather, the rhythms, and your real life — kids, hobbies, commitments and all.

You were made for more than chaos, overwhelm, and “never feeling caught up”.

It doesn’t have to be like that.

When did this idea come to life?

Last year, I decided I was done buying planners. I kept trying new ones. I kept feeling disappointed. So I stopped searching and started building.

This truly is designed by a gardener, for a gardener.

Why would this make an incredible gift?

Because it’s undated. Your gardening friend can start whenever their season starts. No wasted pages. No pressure to “keep up.”

It’s thoughtful, practical, and customizable.

How do I use it?

From the very beginning of the season:

  • Plan varieties.
  • Track seed starting dates.
  • Note where you bought plants.
  • Record germination rates, harvest dates, sun and water needs.
  • Design your beds on the grid pages.
  • Map out seasonal tasks (orchard spray in February, perennial clean-up in March, Chelsea Chop in May, etc.).
  • Assign weekly rhythms (weed Monday, water Tuesday, harvest Thursday…).

In the morning, I check weather and priorities.
At night, I jot down what mattered.
If I think of something for next month — I brain dump it.

It flexes with me.
